Best College for Skiing?

Best college to ski winter park coUniversity of Colorado Best College for Skiing

I was checking out what Skiing Magazine had to say about the upcoming ski season and I came across their article Ski School.

The article gives Skiing Magazines top 12 colleges to attend  to be able to ski and that have a good ski culture.  And obviously the 12 schools have great access to some very good skiing.  There are some East Coast schools in here that I didn’t think would be good ski schools and some Northwest schools I have never heard of .  But best of all Skiing Magazine has the one and only University of Colorado.  This is what Skiing had to say about the home of the skiing Buffs:

The University of Colorado

CU Boulder counts 33 Olympic skiers that have participated in the Olympics over 50 times among its alumni. A prime spot for training, Boulder is nearly a mile high, and gets an average of 255 sunny days every year. Competitive skiers here have a social life too; the program sponsors “a ski ball” each year, which also serves as a highly successful fundraiser for their program. Colorado is home to 26 ski resorts, and the university is about two hours from eight of them.

Yes, Winter Park Resort is one of the eight resorts that is within 2 hours of Boulder and it is the second closest behind Eldora Mountain.

I am surprised that the University of Denver was not on this list as the DU Pioneers have pretty much dominated college level skiing the last ten years.

The University of Denver’s 19 team championships in skiing are the most in NCAA history, ahead of Colorado’s 16 and Utah’s 10. The 2008 title also marked the Pioneers’ fifth championship since 2000. DU also won in 2000, ’01, ’02 and ’05.

So what is the No.1 ski school? Well it has to be the University of Colorado. OK OK I’m biased I’m an alum.

Now what college will Nicholas & Willem (the Twins) be attending? I’m pushing for CU or DU and both schools ski teams train right here in Winter Park, CO. Their mother keeps on talking up her alma matter, Wake Forest, but the only way they can ski down there is if God turns tobacco white. Anywho, they are only 3 so lots of time to figure out college still.

Go Buffs!

Winter Park Lodging Company’s Facebook Page has been up and running for about four months now and we are sitting at 275 fans or “Likes” as Facebook likes to call it.  Not so bad but boy we sure wish we could be sitting at 1000.

WPLCo Facebook Page

So here is our unabashed plea to help us get to that 1000.  I would say we are a proud bunch here but sometimes you need to grovel.  The song says “Ain’t to Proud to beg sweet Darlin’ and Winter Park Lodging Company isn’t either.  If you have any inclination to suggest the Winter Park Lodging Company Facebook Page to your friends we would really really appreciate it.  For those that don’t know how to suggest to friends, you click on the third link below the Winter Park Lodging Company photo on the WPLCo Facebook Page that says “suggest to friends” while you are logged into your account.  Then click on all your friends and send them an invite to follow or “like” WPLCo.

Yes, as I said it is begging and it ain’t proud but this is social media marketing and sometimes you can’t be proud.  What all your friends will get for following WPLCo on Facebook is our witty humor, Winter Park CO lodging deals and an insider scoop of what Winter Park is all about.  You may even see some of the WPLCo staff up on the hill skiing or out and about on one of our various outings.

For any of you that take the time to suggest us we really appreciate it and for just following us we are indebted, so Thank YOU!

Recipe of the Month: May

Blackberry Sour Cream Pie

We started a new tradition at our end-of-season Winter Park Lodging Company party a couple of weeks ago. What started out as “witty banter” between Heather and Sarah  in the office about who can make a better pie, turned into the “First Annual Winter Park Lodging Company Pie-Off” at the annual end-of-season bash.

The idea took off with more momentum than any of us expected, and we had about eight pies in the running, although we were dissappointed that Dace, local chef for Wild Horse Gourmet & Catering, ”forgot” about the contest and came to the party empty handed. Sarah made sure we didn’t let him forget, so I’m sure next year he’ll won’t make that mistake again.

So, here is the recipe for my personal favorite of the contest, perfected by Amy, the super-hero of the daunting “spreadsheet” and so much more at Winter Park Lodging Company. Thanks, Amy!

Ingredients:
1 (9 inch) unbaked pie shell
1 cup sugar
1 cup sour cream
3 tablespoons flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
16 ounces pkg. fresh or frozen blackberries (thawed)
1/4 cup fine bread crumbs
2 tablespoons flour
1 tablespoon butter or margarine, melted

Directions:
Place berries in pie shell. Combine one cup sugar, sour cream, flour and salt. Spread sour cream mixture on top. Combine bread crumbs and remaining sugar and butter. Sprinkle on top. Bake at 375 for 40-45 minutes or until done.

Winter Park Lodging Company

official-wplco-logoIt is official! Winter Park Lodging by Owner is rebranding itself to Winter Park Lodging Company.  The beginning of the change has already been undertaken and in the next 6 to 9 months it should be completed.  The new website and blog can be found at the Winter Park Lodging Company site.  There you will find our new blog and the rest of the info that can be found on the Winter Park Lodging by Owner site.  Both sites will work and there will be two blogs but at some point the will merge to be just one blog.

Reasons for the rebranding can be summed up in that we have evolved to much more than a by owner vacation rental management company.  The name has become a bit confusing to our owners and guests.

You may notice in the new Winter Park Lodging Company logo we also have a tag line “Play Hard. Rest Easy”. We think the tag line defines what Winter Park Lodging by Owner has become and what Winter Park Lodging Company will bring for guests for years to come.

So whooweee we are off with a new name and the same great service and attitude that WPLBO started five years ago!

The folks at WPLBO get to know our guests often quite well by email and phone, but sometimes you don’t get to meet face to face.   We took this shot at the Rockies Opening Game yesterday (a winner over the Phillies by the way!) and thought it would be a good one to post for all to meet the WPLBO team member(s) that helped them find a vacation property in Winter Park.

That’s Jill on the far left. She lives in Denver part time and Winter Park part time.  Sarah & Chris are next – they’re the owners and got the honor of footing the bill (and all the bills) yesterday.  Next is Rachel who has been with WPLBO since Feb 08. Valarie (or “Val” as we call her) was our first employee and will soon celebrate her 2 year anniversary with WPLBO.  Last but not least – the ultimate blogger – Amy, who forgot she was in Denver and not Winter Park, and wore long underwear to the game.
Stay with us two or three times and you’ll most likely talk, email, or meet all of these folks!
